Our stone nutmeg is hand-picked at peak ripeness from a single orchard in Zanzibar. Nutmeg is the inner pit of a yellow stone fruit that splits open when the valuable pit is ripe.
Our nutmeg comes whole and can be grated or ground into pasta sauce, cream sauces and desserts. This is truly some of the best nutmeg in the world, harvested by hand, dried in the sun and delivered directly to your kitchen.

SOURCING
Our nutmeg comes straight from a spice cooperative on the islands of Zanzibar and Pemba in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Tanzania. Spices were introduced to the islands in the 1800s, when they were ruled by the Omani sultanate, and many of our partner farms have been growing spices for generations.
As with all spices, freshness matters for nutmeg. March is nutmeg season in Zanzibar, and our current lot of nutmeg was harvested last March. Nutmeg is the meat of the pit of a stone fruit, similar to an apricot, and mace is the red, finger-like membrane that surrounds the pit. The fruit itself has a bitter, astringent flavor, but the mace and nutmeg are gorgeous, sweet and fragrant.
Burlap & Barrel is the sole importer of spices from Zanzibar, including stone nutmeg, to the US, and our nutmeg (like all our spices from Zanzibar) is organic.
Meet the Farmer: Meet Mzee Sio and his granddaughter Yusra. Along with his wife, he owns one of the most productive (and successful) nutmeg orchards in Zanzibar, located about an hour outside of Stonetown. Walking through the orchard with us, Mzee Sio pointed up and said "Everything my children have is because of these trees."

No (non)holiday without it
In my family, nutmeg was always the flavor of the holiday season - warm and comforting but always the stuff of pumpkin pie and eggnog. As B&B has done with most spices, they’ve opened my eyes to other possibilities. Other sources could have told me that but the wonderful taste and quality of whole nutmegs from B&B has enticed me to look further than before.

Great gift!
It was a gift for someone who is gourmet cook..she loves spices!

I love the jar for stare
Extremely fresh and fragrant. Nice quality of nutmegs too.

B&B Spices 4Ever
My recent new spice purchase was Stone Nutmeg. The flavor is so fresh and tasty in the baked goods I made during the Holidays. My go-to spices from B&B is Wild Mountain Cumin and Flowering Hyssop Thyme. I’m on my 2nd bottle of Thyme and Cumin and love the flavor they add to my dishes. The bonus is the small batch and thoughtful growing practices. So much fresher than store bought spices.

Perfect for Egg Nog and anything else you use nutmeg for
Like all B&B Spices, great flavor, fresh nuts. I have a hand nutmeg grinder and it’s eggnog season so I’m going through these pretty fast. But I also throw some into most all my cooking: sweet and savory. Nutmeg is one of my favorite flavors.

Tiny Nutmeg With A Most Impressive Punch
Nice fresh flavour. Smaller than nutmeg I'm used to but equally pungent and wonderful. I'd absolutely buy it again if I can't get the Grenada Gold.

Excellent Quality
Happy with my purchase!
