Just in time for the weather to start cooling down, our good friends at Goodnow Farms are back with another cocoa treat that is guaranteed to warm you up!

The Pimienta Gorda Hot Cocoa is made from a blend the same amazing single-origin cacao beans that Goodnow Farms owners, Tom and Monica, use to make their chocolate bars. They roasted, pressed and ground the cacao by hand before mixing in our Sweet Allspice for an additional toasty, warming aroma.

These days, most hot cocoa is alkalized, which allows the cocoa powder to dissolve in milk or water more easily, but that process significantly alters the flavor while also removing significant compounds that play a role in the beneficial effects of eating cacao. Tom and Monica refuse to sacrifice flavor, so this hot cocoa is non-alkalized. You may need to stir a your hot cocoa a bit more vigorously, but you'll taste the unique flavor of the beans and get the full benefit of the cacao.

In addition, Goodnow Farms presses their own cocoa butter, a practice that virtually no other chocolate makers in the U.S. do (read Tom wax poetic about hand-pressed cocoa butter here). This extra step results in a rich, incredibly flavorful hot cocoa mix that is made completely from scratch.

Whether you're bringing this as a gift for your Thanksgiving host or enjoying it all for yourself, you're going to truly love this allspice-laced hot cocoa.

  • Origin: Sudbury, Massachusetts, USA
  • Process: Raw cacao beans are roasted and pressed into cocoa butter, then ground and mixed with Sweet Allspice and cane sugar
  • Ingredients: 100% cacao powder, organic cane sugar, Sweet Allspice

Goodnow Farms is a single-origin chocolate company, and like us, Monica and Tom are obsessed with quality sourcing. They hand-make each chocolate bar on their 225-year-old farm, and they purchase raw cacao directly from farmers throughout South America. This enables them to ensure that farmers are fairly compensated and that the farming practices that they are using are sustainable. Like coffee, different cacao beans have different flavors. By using beans sourced from only one farm or region, they are able to highlight the distinct flavor characteristics of that particular bean.

My cocoa fix!

I love this hot cocoa mix. I add a tablespoon of milk chocolate mix to a tablespoon of the Goodnow mix and some wild mesquite and I'm a happy camper!

not your average hot cocoa

I love this cocoa mix so much. I haven't been a hot cocoa mix person for a long time, and I ordered this on a whim during the holidays. The flavor is mellow and not too sweet. I think the allspice is nutty and pleasant and does not overwhelm the cocoa. I have already recommended this to friends!

I gave my chocolate away with Christmas stockings!

I LOVE EVERYTHING I have ordered from Burlap & Barrel!! Sad to say I gave away the hot chocolate & the evergreen ramps as Christmas gifts because I needed to have something for my sister who is a Martha Stewart aficionado (not sure if I used that in the proper context but you get the idea!) She told me she “loved the presents!” but I need to ask her exactly what her thoughts are re: how she used them & what exactly are her thoughts. Sorry Guys, that’s all I know about those.
