Our Szegedi 178 Hot Paprika is grown on a small regenerative farm in the oldest paprika-growing region of Hungary by our partner farmer, Péter. Szegedi 178 is an heirloom variety of hot pepper that has a beautiful aroma and a long, warm burn. The peppers are picked ripe, air-cured in mesh bags, dehydrated, ground and blended with sweet paprika in small batches. Perfect for Hungarian dishes, chili, stew, roasts and anything else in need of sweet heat.

Our partner farmer, Péter, grows an heirloom variety of hot peppers known as Szegedi 178, which has a beautiful red pepper aroma and a long, warm burn. The peppers are picked when perfectly ripe, then hung in mesh bags to cure in the breeze. This curing process, called sukju (or "salami bag" by the locals), brings the sugars to the surface. After curing, the peppers are dehydrated, ground and blended with sweet paprika in small batches.

Péter, our partner farmer in Hungary, moved home to Budapest after a stint in England, and there he met his wife. She wanted to leave the city, so in 2010 they made their new home in Kalocsa, working in family business of growing peppers for paprika. He cures the peppers for a month behind his house and the houses of his mother's friends who have aged out of the hard labor. His grandfather's land was taken away by the government when communism took over from Russia, and his grandfather made Péter promise that one day all of his land would grow paprika again.

Paprika

This is an excellent tasting "Hot" paprika. The heat is fairly warm, but it has a great flavor to help to really spice up your foods. A small amount would be great on deviled eggs.

Never knew how much I needed hot paprika in my kitchen

This paprika is amazing! Fresh peppers, sweet but also spicy…. My favorite flavors all wrapped in one! I love paprika in soups and although this one is very spicy it will find a place in many of my fall soups and dishes. I give this a 10 out of 10! I highly recommend it!

Fantastic !

Until the Szegedi 178 Hot Paprika came into my life, by way of the spice club (Spring 2022), I did not like paprika. I thought paprika was the most boring spice on the planet and religiously avoided it. The Szegedi 178 Hot Paprika has totally changed my mind!! It is bursting with flavor and freshness. It is unlike anything I have ever had and is the perfect balance of heat, sweet and bold. It is for when you want to add flavor, but not in a chili heat sort of way. Even though there is a nice heat, it is not a burning heat. This has very quickly morphed into one of my favorite spices. The farmer behind it has a heartfelt story that makes it even better yet. I am grateful to have received this!
