Sourcing

Sour Plums growin before being dried and turned into powder in Nepal from Burlap & Barrel

Native to Nepal, our sour plum powder — known locally as lapsi — is made from a tart, greenish-yellow plum that holds a special place in the country’s culinary and cultural traditions.

Grown in the hilly regions of the Kathmandu Valley, the fruit is harvested during the dry season from late October through mid-December. After harvesting, the plums go through a careful process that includes three stages of dehydration before being finely ground.

Our partner, Manaram Farms leads this work in a dedicated facility, employing over 400 local people. Their commitment extends beyond the product itself — 100% of profits support the Manaram Foundation, which rebuilds schools, opens libraries, provides scholarships and works to ensure girls in farming families have access to education. With Fairtrade-certified practices and a vision centered on sustainability and women’s empowerment, Manaram Farms produces a plum powder with both social and flavorful impact.
